Growing up in a metropolis of both sparkling wealth and crime-ridden slums, from a young age Barbara found herself surrounded by contrasts. Born to Roger and Thelma Gordon in late January 1981 - Barbara was raised in Warren, Ohio. At the age of four her mother was killed in an automobile accident, leaving Barbara in the sole care of her father. After a time - unable to cope with his wife's death - Roger began to drink, and by the time his daughter was ten had become an alcoholic. Refusing to get help - despite his daughter’s pleas - Roger Gordon died on the operating table of the local hospital after falling from a ladder while intoxicated. Roger's death left Barbara in the custody of her father's brother - James Gordon, a police lieutenant in Gotham City, Illinois. Despite all that had happened, Gotham City held an intrigue for the young girl. Over the years her father had been drinking, Barbara and her best friend Marcy had been fascinated by superheroes - creating new heroes, pretending to be them - thus when it became clear she was moving, Marcie gave her - as a going-away present - a plush they had made of one of their creations, called simply "Batgirl." The girls had looked up everything they could about Gotham's local hero: the names of his gadgets, how they worked, fighting styles, the works - information Barbara stored away easily with her photographic memory, information that would become useful in the future. Gotham City and her new family were quite a change from life back in Ohio, but she found herself adjusting to it, and finding that life with the Gordons was better than she had expected. Eventually they adopted her and she fit in so well that one would have thought she'd been born to them in the first place. Her aunt and new mother's name was also Barbara - thus to stem confusion the younger Barbara went by Babs instead - sometimes "Junior." While the family was there for her, her new father turned into one of the greatest staples in her life. A police lieutenant, he would bring case files home with him, storing them in the small office he kept in the back of the apartment. At the age of 13, Barbara would sneak in to look at the files - seeing them as puzzles that could be finished if the pieces were fit together correctly; unfortunately it was not to her uncle's liking, so instead of going about it the obvious way, she would sneak into the office by night after everyone was asleep and read the files... And then one night he nearly caught her - it was a night that would change her life - the night she found out her dad worked with Gotham's Dark Knight - Batman. While Jim Gordon didn't know Barbara was there, Batman did - warning her in a note he'd dropped not to get caught, because Gordon would get angry. After that Barbara began preparing. Martial arts, city plans, track and gymnastics, Barbara pushed herself to the limit, not just in athletics but also academically. By the time she'd reached high school she was already two years ahead of others her age - having skipped two grades in lower school. She joined the Gotham Central High School gymnastics and track teams - the only freshman running track - and found that she was not only out performing her female classmates on the track, she was beating the boys. By the time she was a junior she'd started attracting attention and realized that she could not become a hero if she became well known - it was this that the training had been for, she wanted to be a hero, not for any high and lofty goals or for revenge, just to make Gotham a safer place - the fact that her father - now the Gotham City Police Commissioner - refused to allow her to become a cop only pushed her towards it more. Working from the idea that she needed to get out of the spotlight, in her junior year of high school - at the age of 15 - Barbara "suffered" a "ripped tendon" which took her off the track team. She began taking private instruction in martial arts from her sensei and her grades started to slip from her prior A's to average grades. She retooled her wardrobe - going for a more conservative look to blend in and be overlooked - and at the age of sixteen she graduated from Gotham Central High. After graduation, Barbara enrolled at Gotham State University (GSU) and was one of the youngest members of the Freshman class. Having gotten a work-study position her freshman year at the university library, Barbara spent her second freshman semester and entire sophomore year abroad. Having received a scholarship, she studied library and computer sciences in London, Paris and Madrid before returning home and breezing through her bachelors and master's degrees. Post-grad life was not as difficult as she thought it might be as the job offers started coming in. With her father once again refusing to allow her to go to the Police Academy, Barbara (who had become her father's unofficial partner when he brought home cases) took a job as Head Reference Librarian at the Gotham City Library, and largely forgot all about being a super-hero. But that would not last long... For a short time she lived in Metropolis - working at a computer security firm, but soon her family would cause her to rush home - issues related to the actions of former District Attorney Harvey Dent (acting as Two Face). Things seemed to settle, and then one very fortuitous night, she attended a costume party. It had been one of her first parties since returning from Metropolis and she'd chosen to base her costume on the hero she and Marcy had created - one that was fitting for Gotham; she made a female version of Batman's costume and planned to go as Batgirl. Unfortunately (or fortunately as you might look at it), this party was crashed by one of Gotham's many roaming criminals... Not even thinking Barbara's self defense and gymnastics training seemed to take over as she protected some of her friends from the goons and kept them at bay until the police arrived... and that's when she realized it. And Batgirl was 'officially' born. It wasn't an easy job at first - taking on the heights of Gotham skyscrapers by night and working at the library by day, but in taking down several small gangs on her own she soon caught the attention of Batman and his young partner Robin. She was young, headstrong and good at what she was doing - and despite the attempts by the Bat to dissuade her from her nightly activities, the lesson just didn't take. It wasn't long before her identity - which she had purposely kept from the Dynamic Duo - was unraveled by the master detective. The reveal wasn't as surprising as some would have thought. Having proven herself through her solo work, Barbara became part of the team - the "bat family" if you would. She was 21, a librarian, a vigilante and for two years dated Dick Grayson - whom she found out was Robin. It wasn't hard, once she was in she was in. She and Dick had their time, but eventually the relationship became relatively strained... and it just didn't seem to work anymore. She went out with several other individuals, for a brief time becoming engaged to a private detective she'd known for years named Jason Bard - but it lasted less than a month as they found the were much better friends than lovers. By the time she was 24, she was splitting her time between the cave, her family, her job and her other obligations. Careful to craft cover stories about what she did at night. She tried dating but the odd scheduel she kept caused three of her boyfriends to ask her if she was a stripper or a call girl who worked days as head of the Reference Section at the main branch of the library - needless to say these relationships did not last long. All was relatively normal - or as normal as things could get given her choice in evening activity, until mid-2008, when Barbara woke up one morning, not in her own apartment, not even in the same country she'd fallen asleep in. Finding yourself in Canada after going to sleep in your own bed in Gotham is confusing enough, but when there is no way to leave your new 'place of residence'? It can become nearly unbearable. Over the year and half she spent in London, Ontario, Canada, Barbara managed to get herself a job at the local library and have a semi-successful relationship with a man (she later found out was a Demon Hunter) named Dean Winchester. Unfortunately it seemed like all her other relationships it was doomed to fail - as Dean disappeared not once but on four separate occasions, forgetting who she was each time he reappeared. She was starting a sort of relationship with another individual named Bobby Drake when she found herself waking up back home in Gotham... The strangest thing about the District (as the residents called it) was who had shown up. Bruce had been there at one point - as had Rachel Dawes (who Barbara knew was dead), individuals she was unfamiliar with, some she was... It was there that she met and got to know Tim Drake... If anything could be said it was that it was a very strange year and a half... and then, one day, she woke up back in Gotham. She found that it was November 2009 and as strange as all this was, it seemed as if no one even knew that she had been missing. Everyone seemed to think that she had been at home all along. Everything she owned was back in its proper place, but she knew that it hadn't been a dream. She had proof! While she had been in Canada she had learned about things that went bump in the night - demons, ghosts (things that Bruce, as a rule, left to the likes of Jason Blood and their neighborhood magician Zatanna) - however upon Dean's (her Dean's) first disappearance she was left with his ring (which had protection runes on it.) Additionally she had a photograph that Dick Grayson (or a Dick Grayson [because he was certainly not the man she'd dated]) had given her of the Bat Family, but she was in a wheelchair. Upon reconnecting with Bruce - someone who, although technically Barbara's boss (in the field), she felt something for (even if she wouldn't admit it) - she learned that Dick had taking up the mantle of Nightwing and had left Gotham for Blüdhaven - Gotham's sister city. Not only that, but here had been another Robin (Jason Todd) who had died, and the boy she'd met in Canada - Tim Drake - had become the new Robin. She knows that her friends are rather skeptical about her story, but despite it all she is determined as ever not to let anything happen to her family! She is slowly realizing that she has real feelings for Bruce (beyond that which she thought was just a somwhat girlish crush), and with the strange happenings recently, only time will tell what may happen... Neither her aunt nor her uncle know of her late night activities and she has been very careful to keep it a secret from Jessica and the ever-inquisitive Jimmy (who may have his suspiscions). Someday she may tell them - and she wonders sometikmes whether or not her uncle already knows - but until the time comes she cannot chance their being a target because of her - her family means more to her than anything and she will do anything in her power to keep them from danger. Weaknesses/Character Flaws: Barbara is above all things a control freak. Having grown up in an environment where she had very little control, this flaw is understandable. She is bright, understanding, but if she feels something is wrong she will not hesitate to speak up - something which is not always a plus, given what she and the other Bats do on a nightly basis. Physically, Barbara only has as much strength as comes naturally. She has special training but no powers to rely on, and if you fall from the batropes... well... the street will flatten you, there are no questions there. In order to make up for this, she (like the rest of the family) rely on gadgets and their wits to keep up. This is of course something of a disadvantage, given some of the villans they go up against have been physically altered. Other: During her lower school and college careers Barbara was on school gymnastics teams. She also has various gadgets that she uses as Batgirl; she has to be careful not to leave these items around and is pretty good at tinkering with them.
